Orchid Technology IBM 8514/A Emulation Driver v1.0
===============================================================================
The following explains how to install the appropriate 8514/A emulation driver
programs for ProDesigner II series card. These driver programs provide the
emulation of the 8514/A through the use of the special software. You should
find the following files:
ORCAI-16.EXE
ORCAI256.EXE
STAN0715.FNT
STAN0814.FNT
STAN1220.FNT
ORCAI.DOC (this file)
INSTALLATION:
-------------
1) Create a subdirectory on the hard disk called 8514 or another name
of your choice.
2) Copy the above listed files to that newly-created subdirectory.
3) Decide which graphics mode you want to run your 8514 software in, and use
the appropriate driver program as given in the table below:
===========================================================================
Resolution Colors Mode Video Memory Driver
(Hex) Required Program
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
640x480 16 12 512KB ORCAI-16.EXE
640x480 256 2E 512KB ORCAI256.EXE
1024x768 16 37 512KB ORCAI-16.EXE
1024x768 256 38 1MB ORCAI256.EXE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:
Please beware that some applications require you to run the ORCAI256.EXE rather
than the ORCAI-16.EXE; otherwise, you will see "mouse droppings" on the
screen.
4) Once you choose the correct ORCAI emulation driver program, enter it
at the DOS prompt before you run your 8514/A supported software.
For example,
ORCAI-16
5) You can now run your application software under 8514/A emulation.
NOTE: Because ORCAI-16 and ORCAI256 "emulate" the 8514/A, you may find that
some application programs which support the IBM 8514/A standard will not work
with the ORCHID AI driver programs. This is because those application programs
were written to work directly with the 8514 graphics hardware. While the
ProDesigner II/MC is a very versatile graphics adapter, it does not use the
expensive 8514/A co-processor or special hardware circuitry to support its high
resolution modes (e.g. 1024x768 with 256 colors). Hence programs written for
8514/A hardware will not find the same hardware, and an incompatibility will
arise.
